It's been a crazy year! I was working for Source HOA, managing 11 of their 15 HOAs and slowly realizing they were not truthful, honest or forthcoming. I hated the way things were going and in July, put my notice in. The owner actually had the audacity to tell me he wanted me to train his girlfriend to take my place before I left. Of course, I did not.
A week later, two of my HOAs asked me to open up my own management company. After several conversations, I agreed and would open my doors December 1st, 2023. Life had other ideas. At the beginning of September, my phone blew up from my previous board members telling me that Source was closing their doors and they needed to find new management. I had to move up the opening of my business immediately. I wasn't able to bring on all of my previous HOAs, as it was just me handling the management and the operations, but I brought on as many as I could without the risk of dropping the ball. As I worked on my management fees to keep them competitive, I realized that every management company I compared to all nickel and dimed their HOAs. Some even charging to sign a check to pay the bills! I wanted to do better and be better. At Design HOA, day-to-day business dealings are included in a simple, flat rate fee. We don't charge for paying bills, writing checks, collecting assessments, postage, envelopes or paper to mail bills. We even cover DORA and SOS filings in our management fee. I also discovered that most HOA board members never see a bank statement. I believe in 100% transparency, and I email over the HOAs bank statements every month. The board deserves to know where their finances stand every single month. I'm still tweaking and adjusting as I go along. I want to be fair, competitive and honest with those I work with.
